Along Came The Spiders, written by Tina Hallock, the first lady of the University of Richmond, tells how the University of Richmond became the only Spider mascot in collegiate sports.
After reading many accounts of how the Spider mascot came to be, Tina was inspired to write a children’s book detailing the history. The book is illustrated by Kaitlin Jones Stasiunas, the University of Richmond’s health promotion coordinator and a talented artist.

Tina Hallock, the first lady of the University of Richmond, has a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is a champion for the well-being of students and families, always normalizing the conversation around mental health. To make a broader impact, Tina co-created a podcast, “No Need to Explain with the Mental Health Mamas” with over 130 episodes and listeners from around the world. Tina grew up in Hadley, Massachusetts and currently lives with her husband and their dogs in Richmond, VA.
Kaitlin Stasiunas’ love for drawing grew the moment she made a scribbled mural on her childhood bedroom wall with her Mom. Art, in many different ways, has been a passion of hers since that moment. Kaitlin has always strived to follow in her talented mother’s footsteps. When she isn’t illustrating, promoting health and wellness at the University of Richmond, or teaching her Art studio course, you will find her at a local CrossFit gym, or spending quality time with husband and 1 year old son in Henrico, Vir ginia.
